Making Space for Reflection

STATE LIBRARY OF QUEENSLAND

Dearly Departed is a thought-provoking exhibition at the State Library of Queensland, exploring death as a universal yet deeply personal experience through the Library’s extensive collections, revealing how communities across Queensland have understood and commemorated death across time. Offering a deeply human perspective on mortality, the exhibition reframes death not as an ending, but as an enduring part of life’s narrative.

Goldi expanded the existing exhibition identity into the physical space, developing a calm and contemplative environment that responds to the exhibition’s themes. A palette of deep blues and navies establishes a sense of depth and stillness, while accents of warm orange introduce a subtle glow reminiscent of candlelight.

Title and thematic panels are produced on fabric, softening the architectural space and adding a tactile, immersive quality that encourages reflection.

Across the exhibition, the visual language unfolds with restraint, supporting moments of pause and introspection. Graphic elements, material choices and spatial treatments work together to create a cohesive experience that guides visitors through complex emotional terrain, allowing the stories, objects and voices within the exhibition to resonate with clarity and care.
